Pocket Patrol

Making Australia's
beaches safer

In an average year, over 22 Australians drown in rip currents, while a further 11,000 need rescuing. In fact, 70% of Australians can't accurately identify rips, making them the biggest killer on our beaches. How we've been educated about them hasn't changed in decades, so we set out to improve beach safety education using Samsung technology.

Samsung partnered with Surf LifeSaving Australia to develop Pocket Patrol, an app that displays exact positions of live beach dangers using the most advanced and accurate augmented reality possible. For the first time, beach goers were able to identify the dangers for themselves and learn more about how to avoid them. The app was downloaded 3600 times in the first 4 weeks and the campaign reached 13.2 million through social posts and online film.
