Bullying has moved from schoolyards to social media. Shielded by screens, kids often don't consider the effect their words can really have. We set out to find a way to tackle online bullying before it happens.

We created reword, an effective tool that works like a spell checker for online bullying. As a child types, this browser plug-in searches an evolving database of abusive words and phrases. When one is recognised, the child is instantly alerted with a red strikethrough, a simple symbol that encourages kids to reconsider what they write. reword has been embraced in Australia amongst children, parents and schools, and is having a genuine impact on online bullying behaviour.
